REDNECK CORNER (1992)

With Joe Doyle

— How to Barbecue

  • Starring Joe Doyle as himself
  • Directed by Joe Doyle and Joe Terwilliger
  • Produced and Filmed by Joe Terwilliger
  • Filmed on video, September 7, 1992 – East Village, New York City

Joe Doyle, doctoral candidate and erstwhile redneck stumbles into the middle of Wigstock 1992 as he searches for a barbecue grill in New York’s East VIllage. Opening scenes shot in the late Village Idiot… This film is unedited and was shot direct to video, and was the first application of our new camcorder, hence the somewhat shaky camera work at times, and occasional presence of time-date stamps. Nevertheless, this film captures 1992 New York City at its best…

IN SEARCH OF: FAST FOOD (1992)

— Joe and Joe Go Upstate…

  • Featuring Joe Terwilliger and Joe Doyle
  • Filmed by Joe Doyle and Joe Terwilliger

The story of two urban redneck doctoral candidates on a quest to find the country, and eat at every fast food restaurant between New York City and Wawarsing, where Joe Terwilliger’s parents make a brief cameo appearance before the return to NYC dressed in camouflage, stalked by cats and raccoons, and still hungry for some fast food. Note the extra toppings on the burgers we had at Roy Rogers (fortunately no longer with us…), not to mention Vend-a-bait….

NATHAN’S HOT DOG EATING CONTEST (1997)

  • Hot-dog eating by Joe “The Professor” Terwilliger
  • Commentary and Filming by Patrick J. Gambino, UPS

In 1997, I was alarmed by the fact that a Japanese guy had stolen the Nathan´s hot dog eating contest Mustard Yellow Belt, and decided to train to try and take the title back for the USA. I trained hard for several months, and tried really hard to be a contender. Having broken the world record in practice, I was psyched to go up against former world champion Mike “the Scholar” DeVito, and this is a video of that event… I got hiccoughs halfway through, and had to pause for a minute to avoid a “reversal of fortune”, and even still, despite my poor technique (I did not even think about standing up) I only lost by one bite… I did defeat the former world champion, but did not bring the belt home, alas… I coulda been somebody… But fell just short… I did try to simul-eat during the 2024 competition on ESPN, but despite better technique and strategy, I would only have come in third – its not worth getting back into the business if I cannot really win… That said, when I came in second there was ZERO prize, and now its like several thousand bucks, not to mention promotional opportunities… As usual I was ahead of my time – cool before it was cool, unfortunately…

JOE THE LIFTER (1991-)

  • Featuring Joe “the Lifter” Schleifer

Every year on the first Saturday after the first Monday in Labor Day, since its inception in 1991, the Weirdo Formal Invitational Central Park Golf Classic has been held in Central Park, starting from Columbus Circle at 12:30PM, and terminating at the Key West Diner and Cafe on Broadway just South of 96th street. The videos you will see will amaze you. The people you meet when you play golf in tuxedos in the park are amazing. Joe the Lifter is one such character. Here you will see how we met him while filming the tournament the first year. Subsequently we have run into him every year in Central Park, several of which will also be shown below. Amazing but true… Joe has not failed to meet us yet in the subsequent eleven years. Enjoy these videos and be amazed at the lifting powers of this real New Yorker…. His antics at lifting strangers in the park have been immortalized independently in song by God, the Band, who met Joe independently in Central Park. He is also beloved by Handshake Squad in Tampa…. A true pop icon for our time, we present the original videos of the one and only Joe The Lifter!

SUPER 8 VIDEOS FROM HIGH SCHOOL (1979-83)

When I was young, I made money selling seeds for the American Seed Company, and trapped raccoons to sell the fur. The latter was far more lucrative – not many ways for a kid to make money in small town America… Anyway, I spent some of that money buying a Super 8 Video Camera back in 1978 from the Sears catalog, and had my first experiences making movies and filming stuff.

A couple years ago, one of my best friends, Jery Winters, saw that I had them and volunteered to digitize them for me – he put them together with some music in the background – entirely of his choosing, and the order of the film reels is random, so not really in any logical sequence. Each film was 4 minutes long, as that was what you could fit on one roll of Super 8 films back then…

Videos include hanging out with my friends and my dog in Wawarsing, NY, a family trip driving to Nova Scotia, one of my dad’s fishing trips to the 1000 islands, a trip with my mom and dad to go fishing in Gananoque, Ontario, our high school jazz ensemble’s trip to the NAJE convention in St. Louis (which was my first time on an airplane), and more random segements of life in the early 80s in rural America. Enjoy!
